About... Languages
"About... languages" describes the very particular linguistic situation of Luxembourg. In fact, rare are the countries of the world where, as in Luxembourg, throughout its entire territory and in various fields of private, professional, social, cultural and political life, the population uses several languages, written and oral. This multilingualism has been inscribed in law since 1984: Lëtzebuergësch is defined there as the national language, French as the language of legislation, and French, German and Lëtzebuergësch have the status of administrative and judicial languages.
After a brief historic overview of the use of languages in the country, this brochure deals with the different uses of Lëtzebuergësch (State, church and school) and shows how the people of Luxembourg are used to juggling with languages.
