Jeannot Krecké : "Sports Ministers heading towards zero tolerance in doping"

Date of release : 29-04-2005

Policy area : Education, Youth and Culture Education, Youth and Culture

Event : Informal Meeting of Ministers for Sports

During the press conference following the informal meeting of European Union Sports Ministers, held in Luxembourg on 28 and 29 April 2005, Jeannot Krecké, Luxembourg Minister for Sport, spoke about the fight against doping.

He explained that all the ministers had expressed their concern ‘in the face of doping which is still all too often present in competitive sports and professional sport in general. But we have had the satisfaction of seeing one of our steps meet with success. We learnt yesterday that an agreement was reached, during a meeting of UNESCO’s Executive Board, to create a secretariat to monitor implementation of the international convention against doping in sport, financed from UNESCO’s regular budget".

The Minister further outlined that "the Presidency and the Commission will be at pains to convey to FIFA in the clearest possible fashion that they must fall into line fully with requirements worldwide in the fight against doping. I hope that the sports federations as a whole will be aware that today Sports Ministers confirmed their political willingness to move towards zero tolerance on doping and that as a result they are adopting internal rules. This is a firm undertaking on our part and we hope that the convention will be ratified by the UNESCO member states before the Olympic Games in Turin in the winter of 2006".
