Tripartite social summit for growth and employment

Date of release : 21-03-2005

Policy area : Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs

Event : Tripartite Social Summit

At the initiative of the Luxembourg Presidency, a tripartite social summit will be held in Brussels on 22 March 2005. In the course of the summit, a European Union delegation led by the Prime Minister, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, will have discussions with the European social partners. These discussions will take place just before the European Council of the Heads of State and Governments, on 22 and 23 March.

During these discussions, Prime Minister Juncker will speak on the "refocusing" of the Lisbon strategy and his ambitions for the European Council. Jean-Claude Juncker will insist on the vital ownership of the strategy at the national level and on the role that the social partners can play to improve the governance and be involved in the national action plans for Lisbon. In 2000, the EU Member States had decided that the European Union would have the most competitive knowledge-based economy in 2010.

Aside from the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Union delegation comprises the President of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso, the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Wolfgang Schüssel, the British Work and Pensions Secretary, Alan Johnson, and the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Vladimir Spidla. The United Kingdom will take over the Presidency of the European Union from Luxembourg, followed in turn by Austria. The Luxembourg delegation also includes the Minister of Labour and Employment, François Biltgen.

The employers' delegation will be led by the President of UNICE, Jürgen Strube, the General Secretary, Philippe de Buck, and the Director of the Federation of Luxembourg Industrialists (FEDIL), Nicolas Soisson. The employees' delegation will be represented by the Chairman of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Candido Mendez, and his General Secretary, John Monks. The Chairman of the LCGB, Robert Weber, and the Chairman of the OGB-L [both Luxembourg trade unions], Jean-Claude Reding, also form part of the employees' delegation.
