The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2005 will be occupying the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels for the first six months of the year. The public is invited to visit an exhibition on the premises of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union on Luxembourg’s role in the history of European integration. This exhibition has been created in close cooperation with the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe, a public Luxembourg institution which acts as a platform for collecting, selecting, processing, publishing and conducting research into information on the historical and institutional development of united Europe.
The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2005 has also received help from the directors of the Fondation Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-duc Jean du Luxembourg in providing a fresh look at the everyday environment of European officials, using a variety of works of art by Luxembourg artists in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels and the Kiem building in Luxembourg.

The whole of 2005 has been designated as a year of exchange between the peoples of Japan and Europe. This concert is the first event of an ambitious programme of exceptional cultural events, "People to People". It will be presented by the Japanese Embassy and the Luxembourg Agency for Cultural Action, supported by the Luxembourg Presidency.

Exhibition - The collection of the Wercollier family, on permanent display in the Neumünster Abbey cloister, is presented in the exhibition areas of the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie in Strasbourg.
The event is organised by the Grand Duchy’s Permanent Representative at the Council of Europe, in partnership with the Centre culturel et de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster.
Three artistic events will be held during the exhibition (classical music on 9 February, jazz on 17 February and cabaret on 24 February).

Opera by Henry Purcell. Co-production by the Staatsoper Berlin, the les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg and the Opéra National de Montpellier. First performed in Chelsea in 1689, this opera is based on the Aeneid by the Roman poet Virgil.

Special concert organised in partnership with the Japanese embassy under the musical direction of Mark Foster; featuring a typical Japanese instrument, the SHÔ. Special guest and world-famous soloist, Mayumi Miyata will be playing work by the Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa. On the programme are two of the composer’s most recent works, and one of the line-ups of musicians is a string quartet with solo Shô.

From March 2005 onwards, the Luxembourg Presidency invites visitors to “European Pentagon – Safe and Sorry pavilion" by the Luxembourgish artist Bert Theis.
Created in partnership with the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, the pavilion will be constructed on the roof of the Palais des Beaux-Arts and is intended to signal the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union to the city of Brussels, and also to denote contemporary Luxembourgish artistic and architectural creativity. The construction will also enter into an architectural dialogue with the windows in the Palais des Beaux-Arts designed by the architect Horta.

The St Michel choir from Luxembourg will perform in Berlin as part of the official inauguration of a memorial to the victims of the holocaust. The work to be performed is “War Requiem�? by Benjamin Britten (1913-76). Among the other performers will be the Philharmonic Orchestra of Lodz, Poland, the Kammerorchester Berlin, the Karl-Forster-Chor Berlin, the Männerchor Saarbrücken and the Knabenchor Alt. Berlin.

Concerts - On Sunday 29 May, the streets of Brussels will be invaded by the musicians of the Union Grand-Duc Adolphe. This big musical party will have as its centrepiece a procession of Luxembourgish brass bands through the capital of the European Union. Wind bands and brass bands from the five regions of Luxembourg will make an entrance into the Place Royale in a star formation while playing traditional Luxembourgish marches and Luxembourgish and European music, both traditional and modern.
Festival - At the beginning of June, the European Photomeetings – will be organised in Luxembourg for the first time. This festival will be a chance for professionals, students and photography lovers to meet and share their experiences in themed workshops.
Ballet – The work of Mikis Theodorakis presented by the Maribor National Theatre (NGO) from Slovenia and based on choreography by Lorca Massine. The eponymous film directed by Michael Cacoyannis in 1964, and starring Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas, made the story world-famous.

Concerts - To celebrate the start of the summer, the Luxembourg Presidency will organise a public festival as part of the traditional European Music Festival, with many concerts to be held throughout the Grand Duchy.
Concert - The artistic keynote of the Presidency will be the inaugural concert by the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra of the new Salle de concerts Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte on 26 June 2005, in, among other guests, the attendance of the Ministers of Culture of the European Union.
