Logo of the Luxembourg Presidency

The choice of logo

The logo of the Luxembourg Presidency is the result of a competition launched by the Luxembourg government and open to all graphic designers.

After analysing a hundred or more proposals received from some forty advertising agencies and freelance graphic designers, the choice was made of the logo described below.

The elements of the logo

Logo of the Luxembourg PresidencyThe logo of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union consists of a red/blue square, intersected by the letters "eu" and the figure "2005", followed by ".lu".

The colours symbolise those of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (red-white-blue) and the European colours (blue-yellow).

The star picks up the idea of those on the European flag and the suffix ".lu" has the effect of the internet address of the Presidency (www.eu2005.lu) appearing in the logo.

The text below the logo (Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union) is in 4 languages: French, Luxembourg, German, English.

The characteristics of the logo

The logo is:

  • easily recognised and remembered;
  • simple;
  • modern;
  • dynamic;
  • and dignified.

It can be used in full colour, black and white, negative, screened, in relief, and so on.

It is moreover effective on all media (for instance letterheads, small car stickers, publications, Internet...) and at the same time promotes the image both of Luxembourg and the Presidency.

Finally it is possible to use separate elements of the logo, which can then be applied as elements of illustration recalling the original.
