CFSP Statement
EU declaration on the Russo-Georgian declaration concerning the evacuation of Russian military bases in Georgia

Date of release : 08-06-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

The European Union welcomes the joint declaration adopted on 30 May 2005 by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Georgia, the implementation of which will allow the evacuation of the remaining Russian military bases in Georgia during 2008.

The European Union considers that declaration a significant step and one that contributes to the stabilisation of the South Caucasian region.  It would urge Georgia and the Russian Federation to continue their constructive dialogue in order to increase confidence and normalise their bilateral relations.

The European Union welcomes the parties' intention of taking all measures necessary to fulfil the obligations provided for in the joint declaration, including preparation for the signing at a very early date of the relevant formal agreement.

The European Union considers this declaration an important step and awaits the full implementation of all the undertakings entered into in Istanbul in 1999.

"The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine align themselves with this declaration."

* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
