The European Union remains deeply concerned about the unstable political and social situation in Ecuador.
The European Union deplores the deaths which occurred during recent demonstrations and appeals to the government and to political forces to find a peaceful, consensual and negotiated solution to the present crisis, so as to bring about a rapid return to constitutional normality.
The European Union calls for every effort to be made to strengthen the democratic process and State institutions, while complying with the law, observing fundamental freedoms and abiding by the principle of separation of powers.
The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
