During the press conference after the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Council, Jean Asselborn, current President of the Council, stated:
"I am delighted to receive Oleg Rybachuk, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister, here in Luxembourg today for the 9th session of the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Council.
During the extraordinary session of the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Council on 21 February 2005, we approved, as you know, the EU-Ukraine Action Plan within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy. During the GAERC, which was held that same day, the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the European Union marked their agreement on the measures for enhancing the Action Plan in the areas of specific actions based on proposals jointly formulated by Commissioner Ferrero Waldner and HR/SG Solana.
The Action Plan should guide Ukraine in its reform efforts. As indicated by the GAERC during its session of 21 February, relations between the EU and Ukraine will deepen and become stronger to the extent that Ukraine advances in the implementation of political and economic reforms and in the adoption of European standards.
The goal of today’s session was to draw up a preliminary assessment with a view to the summit that will be held in October of this year by examining the progress made. The EU is resolved to lend its support to the reform programme of the new Ukrainian government. I am happy to say that the Ukrainian government has already undertaken important measures towards respecting its commitments. Consolidation and democratisation are of crucial importance."
During the Cooperation Council, an EU-Ukraine agreement on security procedures for the exchange of classified information and an EU-Ukraine agreement on cooperation in EU-led crisis management operations were signed.
