Mars Di Bartolomeo chairs the conference on "Perspectives for a consumer-oriented policy"

In the framework of the Luxembourg Presidency of the European Union, the Minister for the Economy and Foreign Trade, together with the Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General (SANCO) of the European Commission, organised a conference entitled "Perspectives for a consumer-oriented policy", which brought together about 140 people in Luxembourg on 2 May 2005.

In the presence of European Commissioner Kyprianou and the Minister for Health, Mars Di Bartolomeo, who represented the Ministry for the Economy, Jeannot Krecké, representatives of the Member States, of consumers, of professionals and of different interest groups discussed together the possibilities for improving the quality of information provided on labels. In this context, the Luxembourg Presidency reiterated its ambition of reaching a political agreement in June on the dossier of nutrition and health claims made on food. Both the European Commission and the Council  consider this dossier to be of vital importance for or the promotion of healthier lifestyles across Europe.

The particular focus of the conference was consumer labelling. The abundant and widely varying information available to consumers incurs the risk of sowing confusion instead of providing useful shopping guidance to the consumer. Benefiting from a study analysing the relevance of consumer information that was sponsored by the European Commission, the purpose of the conference was to take a close look at nutritional labelling, based on the points of views of both professionals and consumers.

However, the seminar went beyond its original objective, and also discussed labelling that would raise consumer awareness about responsible consumption, environmental concerns, social aspects, and fair trade.
