The informal meeting of the European Union Development Ministers will be held in Luxembourg on 14 and 15 February. The meeting will be hosted by Jean-Louis Schiltz, Luxembourg Development Minister.
On the first day, February 14, the Ministers will focus on the follow-up of European Union and Member States aid efforts towards the populations affected by the tsunami. The ministers will specifically study the mechanisms of follow-up and control of commitments, as well as means to improve the rapid-reaction capacity of the EU in the event of a natural disaster.
The working session will be followed by a joint Press Conference of the Presidency and the Commission, at 18h00.
The meeting will continue on 15 February.
In the morning, the Ministers will firstly approach challenge of the fight against AIDS in developing countries, in the presence of UNAIDS executive director Dr. Piot.
The second half of the morning will be reserved to the Millennium Devlopment Goals. The Ministers will tackle the question of whether and how these Goals can still be attained before 2015. The discussions, which will be held in the presence of Mark Malloch Brown, the UNDP Administrator, form part of the preparation of the Summit to be held in September at the United Nations in New York.
The informal meeting will close with a tour de table on issues related to the new European Declaration on Development Cooperation Policy.
At 16h30, the Presidency will hold a Press Conference together with the Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel and Dr. Peter Piot of UNAIDS.
