The "General Affairs and External Relations Council", under the presidency of Jean Asselborn, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a discussion of the politcal situation in Ukraine and the EU’s relations with this country, following recent events in the course of its 31 January meeting. During the press briefing, President Asselborn made the following statement:
"The Council was very pleased with the outcome of the re-run of the second round of the presidential election and saluted Victor Yushchenko’s democratic victory. The Council saluted the extensive and ambitious political and economic programme that the new Ukrainian president plans to carry out in Ukraine during his term.
On the occasion of the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Council meeting scheduled for 21 February 2005, the Council looked forward to being able to launch the Action Plan negotiated in the context of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), paving the way for enhanced cooperation between the EU and the Ukraine.
In this context, the Council welcomed the letter from High Representative Solana and Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner, consisting of 10 concrete steps to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Ukraine."
