EU statement at the OSCE on Uzbekistan

Date of release : 19-01-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

On 28 December 2004, the EU circulated as an official OSCE document a declaration on the parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan published by the Presidency of the European Union in The Hague on 27 December 2004. In this declaration, the EU took note of the preliminary findings of the OSCE/ODIHR Limited Election Observation Mission and voiced its concern with regard to significant shortcomings reported in the overall electoral process.

The EU reserves the right to come back to this issue after ODIHR's final report on the conduct of the elections has been issued. The EU reiterates its readiness to work with Uzbekistan towards improving the implementation of OSCE election-related commitments in the spirit of cooperation and mutual trust.

The Candidate Countries Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia* align themselves with this statement.

*Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
