Jean Asselborn, current President of the Council of the European Union, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, met with Hérard Abraham, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Haiti in Luxembourg on the evening of 24 June 2005.
During the meeting, the President of the Council reaffirmed the European Union’s long-term commitment towards Haiti and underlined the importance of the forthcoming elections in Haiti at the end of the year.
Welcoming the renewal of the mandate of MINUSTAH, the United Nations stabilisation force in Haiti, until February 2006, Jean Asselborn said that "the Luxembourg Presidency remains concerned by the precarious security situation in Port-au-Prince and by the rising number of ransom kidnappings."
