Jean-Louis Schiltz, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, will represent the European Union this Wednesday, 14 June 2005, in Doha, Qatar, at the Second Summit of the South that comprises the group of the "77" developing countries and China.
At the South Summit’s opening session, Minister Schiltz will introduce the European Union’s position with a view to the United Nations Summit next September.
The September United Nations Summit will be asked in particular to discuss the Millennium Development Goals, adopted in 2000. In this context, the decision of the European Union’s Development Cooperation Ministers of 24 May of this year is an essential contribution to this Summit. The Member States have decided to spend 0.56% of their GDP on development by 2010 and 0.7% of their GDP by 2015.
