Process of ratifying the European Constitution is not dead declares Jean-Claude Juncker after British government’s decision

Date of release : 07-06-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

After the UK’s decision to suspend its referendum, the process of ratifying the European Constitution "is not dead", stated the Prime Minister and current President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker. The British government has not abandoned the process, but has simply announced that "the British government believes that it must wait and see what line of action the other Member States wish to take on the ratification process during the European Council".

"Next week, we are going to hold intensive talks on the issue together with heads of state and government", stated Jean-Claude Juncker while pointing out: "Given that the majority have said that the ratification process must continue, this is an indication of a possible decision to be taken by the European Council."
