After the General Affairs and External Relations Council on May 23 in Brussels on the situation in Guinea-Bissau, Jean Asselborn, current president of the European Council, stated:

"We expressed our deep worry regarding the fact that Kumba Yala has declared himself President and have reaffirmed our support of the transition process, in close collaboration with the international community, to ensure that the elections of June 19 are carried out freely and transparently."
