At the end of the General Affairs and External Relations Council of May 23 on the topic of Burundi, Jean Asselborn, current President of the European Council, stated:

"We welcome the signing of a joint press release by the Burundi government and the FNL (National Liberation Force) on May 15 last on a cessation of hostilities between the two camps, and have launched an appeal to all parties in Burundi to continue working towards a permanent cease-fire and an inclusive peace process."
