On 12 May 2005, Jean Asselborn, Foreign Minister and current President of the Council of the European Union, met the Chinese State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan in Beijing for talks on political and economic relations between the EU and China.
On the second day of his visit to Beijing, Jean Asselborn also represented the European Union at celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between the EU and the People’s Republic of China.
The President of the Council also took part, alongside Janez Potocnik, EU Commissioner for Research and Zhang Yesui, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, in the opening of a joint EU-Chinese conference on political and strategical orientations in the fields of science and technology.
