Luc Frieden pleads for a European security policy at the University of Cambridge

Date of release : 21-04-2005

Policy area : Justice and Home Affairs Justice and Home Affairs

Under the slogan "Working together for a safer Europe," Luc Frieden, Minister for Justice and current President of the European Union’s Justice and Home Affairs Council, appealed for a strengthened judicial and police cooperation in Europe at the University of Cambridge on Thursday, 21 April 2005.

"Confronted with challenges and problems of a transnational nature such as illegal immigration, drug trafficking, organised crime and even terrorism, no State is able to cope alone. Therefore, Europe must develop strengthened cooperation mechanisms so that the judicial and police authorities can be more efficient through joint action", Minister Frieden stressed.

By including new security and justice objectives, the new European Constitution will make it possible for citizens to live in a safer Europe.

Luc Frieden stated that, "Europe has been the guarantor of peace over the past 60 years, today it must adopt the means to ensure that stability and security throughout our continent."
