On the occasion of the death of His Holiness Pope John Paul II, the Presidency of the European Union pays hommage to the Supreme Pontiff, for his unflagging commitment to the humanistic principles, to democracy and human rights.

Throughout the duration of his pontificate, John Paul II has worked towards peace and equality, towards solidarity and justice. Dialogue between civilisations and religions, fraternity and reconciliation have been at the centre of the message he brought to the peoples of the world.

The Presidency of the European Union bows down before him, who has contributed to the reunification of the East and the West of the European continent.
