On 17 and 18 March 2005, Lucien Lux, Minister for the Environment, and Jean-Louis Schiltz, Minister for Development Cooperation, will represent the European Union at a G8 ministerial meeting to be held in Derbyshire (United Kingdom).
On the agenda will be such topics as:
- reform of humanitarian aid
- implications of climate change in Africa
- illegal deforestation in developing countries
- the protection of biodiversity
The conclusions and recommendations of the report by the Commission for Africa will also be discussed during the meeting.
The Commission for Africa is a consultative body of 17 high-profile figures. It was established by the British government and is presided over by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Its objective is to propose specific and coherent actions for accelerating development in Africa.
The meeting is organised by the United Kingdom, which currently holds the Presidency of the G8. In addition to the United Kingdom, the member States of the G8 are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and Russia. The European Union also participates in the meetings of the G8, and is represented by the Luxembourg Presidency and the European Commission.
