In the context of the International Conference on Terrorism in Madrid on 10 and 11 March, Jean-Claude Juncker, in his capacity as current President of the European Council, held a series of bilateral meetings with European political leaders.

Jean-Claude Juncker had the opportunity to talk with the President of the Republic of Croatia, Stipe Mesic, about the situation in Croatia and the neighbouring countries, and about the conditions under which negotiations for adhesion to the European Union could begin.

The Luxembourg Prime Minister also held talks with his Romanian counterpart, Calin Popescu Tariceanu. They discussed the signature of the adhesion treaties by Romania and Bulgaria, which is planned to take place in Luxembourg on 25 April 2005. Jean-Claude Juncker took the opportunity to speak to the Romanian Prime Minister about the reform process under way, and in particular about the efforts the new Government is making to fight corruption.

The meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was an opportunity to touch on the opening of negotiations for Turkey’s adhesion to the EU, and in particular the terms of the screening process, as well as the signature of the protocol of adaptation of the Ankara Agreement. The two Prime Ministers also discussed matters relating to Cyprus.

Jean-Claude Juncker also met Joaquin Almunia, the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetray Affairs, in view of the Eurogroup and enlarged Eurogroup meetings on 20 March. Only one item is to appear on the agenda of this meeting, namely the Stability and Growth Pact.

Over and above the European dossiers, Jean-Claude Juncker exchanged views with the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister, Shimon Peres, on the Middle East peace process, and in particular the Gaza Strip withdrawal plan.
