CFSP Statement
Declaration by the Presidency of the European Union concerning the suicide attack in Tel Aviv

Date of release : 26-02-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

The Presidency of the European Union condemns unreservedly the suicide attack perpetrated on 25 February in Tel Aviv which caused the death of at least 4 persons and numerous wounded.

The Presidency presents its sincere condolences to the families of the innocent victims as well as to the government of Israel.

This attack clearly aims to undermine the bases laid out by the Summit of Sharm el Sheikh for a peaceful and negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to impede the cooperation between the two parties.

The authors and persons responsible for this horrible crime have to be apprehended and judged. The European Union calls upon the parties to fully cooperate in this regard. It is essential not to allow terrorists to sabotage the recent peace efforts.

A determined fight against terrorism is crucial for the search for a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. The European Union urges all States in the region to use their influence in this regard.
