Date of Speech : 30-06-2005

Place : Vienna

Speaker : Jacques Reuter, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg at the OSCE

The European Union also continues to closely follow the situation of Uzbek asylum seekers in Kyrgyzstan. We recall our statements delivered at the Permanent Council sessions of 16 and 23 June. We trust the assurances given by the Kyrgyz authorities that Kyrgyzstan will strictly comply with its relevant international commitments and obligations, in particular the International Convention on Refugees of 1951, and work in closest co-operation with the UNHCR.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, as well as Ukraine and Moldova align themselves with this statement.

* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process
