Policy area : Competitiveness (Internal market, Industry and Research) Competitiveness (Internal market, Industry and Research)

The Presidency is delighted with the joint statement signed this morning in Moscow by the six partners in the international negotiations on the experimental nuclear fusion reactor known as ITER, stipulating that the reactor will be built in Cadarache, France. The Presidency notes with great satisfaction the positive manner in which the parties reached this agreement and, in particular, the highly positive discussions between the European Union and Japan.

The Presidency wishes to stress the success that this agreement represents for the European Union, which acted in a concerted and determined manner that spared no effort so that Europe could host this project that holds great promise for humankind.

This is a great day for Europe because this project fits in with the promotion of scientific and technological development, contributes to the sustainable development of our society, and is a source of jobs.
