Press Release
Environment Council favours implementation of a United Nations Environment Organisation

Date of release : 24-06-2005

Policy area : Environment Environment

Event : Conseil Environnement

During its session of 24 June 2005, the Environment Council discussed a future United Nations Environment Organisation (UNEO). The objective of this organisation, which would be developed based on the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), would be to strengthen the position of the environment within the family of the United Nations. It would be a matter of elevating UNEO to the level of a UN organisation, in accordance with the conclusions of the European Council of 17 and 18 June 2005. “The UNEO will be the equal of the other agencies and will benefit from stable financing. I am happy about the unanimous vote today. This success was made possible by, among others, the political efforts of France. This is a strong message that will allow us to focus on this subject, in conformity with the desire of the Secretary General, on the occasion of the United Nations Summit in September", stated Lucien Lux, Minister for the Environment and current President of the Environment Council, during a press conference held after the sessions.
