Press Release
Twelfth ministerial meeting between the European Union and the Rio Group in Luxembourg on 26 and 27 May 2005

Date of release : 24-05-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

Event : XIIth Ministerial Meeting EU-Rio Group

On 27 May, the 12th ministerial meeting between the European Union and the Rio Group will be held at the Kiem Conference Centre. In this context, ministerial meetings between the European Union and the various regional sub-groups, i.e. the Chile-European Union Association Council, the Ministerial Meeting of the Central America-European Union San Jose Dialogue, the Mexico-European Union Joint Council, the Ministerial Meeting between the European Union and the Andean Community and the Ministerial Meeting between the European Union and MERCOSUR, will be held throughout the 26 of May.

The Declaration of Rome of 20 December 1990 has institutionalised relations between the European Union and the Rio Group and has given rise to a forum for dialogue between the two regions. In Luxembourg, in April 1991, the first ministerial meeting was organised within this framework. At the time, it brought together the European Community of 12 and the 11 countries in the Rio Group. Today, the Rio Group comprises 19 countries on the Latin-American continent and is currently chaired by Argentina on the basis of annual rotation.

At the work meetings of 27 May, Ministers will address, in particular, the issues of regional cooperation and integration, the preparation of the UN Summit next September and different aspects of social cohesion. The future of relations between the European Union and the Rio Group will also appear on the agenda.

This meeting will take stock of the past 14 years, during which the two regions have continued to enlarge and grow stronger in order to meet the multiple challenges faced by our societies today, and to deepen the intense and fruitful contacts that the European Union and its Member States enjoy with the Latin-American continent.

The various ministerial meetings that will be held at the Kiem Conference Centre on 26 May will address political, economic, bilateral and cooperation issues, in particular in relations between the European Union and the different regional sub-groups.
