Press Release
Jean Asselborn: “We have made significant progress with Russia in the four Common Spaces”

Date of release : 25-04-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

Event : General Affairs and External Relations Council

Following the "General Affairs and External Relations" Council meeting on Monday 25 April 2005, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and President in office of the EU Council, Jean Asselborn, declared on the subject of negotiations with Russia:

"Significant progress has been made in the four Common Spaces over the last few weeks. The decision to adopt the four Common Spaces was taken by the EU-Russia Summit in May 2003 in St Petersburg.

This morning’s discussions have reinforced my conviction that the road maps for these four Common Spaces may well be adopted at our next EU-Russia summit, which will take place in just over two weeks, on 10 May, in Moscow.

For the last time, we have reviewed the different areas in which the EU and Russia intend to reinforce cooperation in the years to come - that is the economy, justice, external security, and, finally, research, education and culture.

The Presidency and the Commission have been mandated to finalise the preparations for the Summit on this basis."
