Date of release : 20-04-2005

Policy area : Environment Environment

On 18 April 2005, Lucien Lux, Minister for the Environment and current President of the European Union’s Environment Council, had several talks in Washington to discuss the issue of climate change.

Lucien Lux met Ms Paula Dobrianski, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs. Both parties recognised the urgent need to combat climate change and discussed possible future cooperation in this area and on the environment in general. To launch the dialogue between the European Union and the United States once and for all, they agreed to create working groups in the different areas of the environment and for climate change, energy efficiency and technology in particular.

Lucien Lux also met Mr James Connaughton, Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Lucien Lux described the talks as highly constructive since both parties agreed for the first time on the urgency of a common commitment to combat climate change.
