CFSP Statement
Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union regarding recent developments in Bolivia

Date of release : 09-06-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

The European Union wishes to express deep concern regarding the current situation in Bolivia.  President Carlos Mesa's resignation has created a climate of political and economic uncertainty in the country which continuous strikes, road blockades and violent demonstrations are not helping to resolve.

The European Union calls upon the institutional and political players and on Bolivian society as a whole to pursue open and constructive dialogue so that a mutually agreed, negotiated and peaceful solution can be arrived at, respecting the constitutional order.

The European Union is ready to cooperate with such effort at concertation in order to contribute to restoring a climate of social peace in Bolivia.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
