CFSP Statement
Declaration of the Presidency of the European Union on Haiti

Date of release : 25-02-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

In the light of the grave events that occurred on Saturday, 19 February 2005 as a result of the attack on the National Penitentiary, the Presidency of the European Union reiterates its firm support to the interim government and institutions of the State of Haiti, as well as to their efforts and those of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) in favour of the restoration and maintenance of security in the country.

Welcoming the establishment of an independent commission of enquiry, the European Union hopes that the results of the investigations can shed light on the facts that led to the death of a police officer and the escape of 481 prisoners, whilst identifying those responsible in order to take legal action against them.
