CFSP Statement
Declaration by the Presidency of the European Union following the statement by North Korea that it possesses nuclear weapons and suspends its participation in the multilateral negotiations for an indefinite period of time

Date of release : 11-02-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

The Presidency of the European Union expresses its strong concern regarding the statement of DPRK, dated 10 February 2005, that it possesses nuclear weapons. It notes with regret the announcement by the DPRK to suspend for an indefinite period of time its participation in the multilateral talks on its nuclear programme.

It urges DPRK to revoke as soon as possible its decision to withdraw from the six-party talks, and to allow the resumption of negotiations in order to find a negotiated and peaceful solution to the crisis in the Korean peninsula. It reasserts its strong support to the process of the six-party talks in the resolution of the crisis.

The Presidency of the European Union renews its appeal to DPRK to comply with the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The respect of international obligations, both on nuclear and human rights issues, is an indispensable condition for the EU to develop its bilateral relations with the DPRK.

The Presidency strongly encourages the authorities of the DPRK to strengthen the dialogue and to intensify contacts with the Republic of Korea.
