CFSP Statement
Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the attack in Habiganj, Bangladesh

Date of release : 29-01-2005

Policy area : General Affairs and External Relations

The European Union is deeply dismayed by the latest attack on the opposition at the rally at Habinganj on 27 January. The EU expresses its shock and strongly condemns the attack. The Presidency of the EU extends its condolences to the bereaved families of former Finance Minister Shah Kibria and of the other victims killed in this ghastly incident. It also expresses its sympathy to those injured in the attack and hopes for their early recovery.

The EU Presidency is concerned that the lack of proper investigations of such attacks leads to a climate of impunity which encourages the continuation of such incidents. It calls upon the Government of Bangladesh to take all necessary measures to thoroughly and transparently investigate the attack and to insure due process of law.
